General Notes: Husband - James Turner Burns
He was born at Burns' Mill, on Lost creek, in Juniata (later Mifflin) County, Pennsylvania. He went to work at an early age to support his widowed mother, and learned the plastering trade. When not working at his trade he cleared land, until he had a small farm cleared out of about two hundred acres which he purchased in Clarion township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and when this work was done followed farming as well as his trade. He taught public school in the winter time. He was elected assessor of Clarion township in 1845, and school director and justice of the peace in 1846. He was elected county commissioner of Clarion county in 1850. In 1859 he was elected treasurer of Clarion County, and removed to the town of Clarion in the spring of 1860, in order that he might more conveniently perform the duties of that office. In 1862 and 1863 he was one of the editors of The Clarion Democrat, and in 1868 and 1875 was elected county commissioner of Clarion County. He was the only citizen of that county who was elected and served in that office for three terms, comprising nine years. In addition he was commissioners' clerk for three years. He served in elective county offices for eleven years.
