General Notes: Husband - Levi Stephens
He was, by profession, a civil engineer, and for some years was in the employ of the Government as surveyor of public lands; and by reason of the financial embarrassment following the close of the Revolutionary War, he was offered by the government land instead of money for his services, which was accepted by him, and a large amount of this land long remained in the possession of his descendants.
He came to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, when about eighteen years of age, as a government surveyor.
The immigrant ancestor of this branch of the Stephens family was Levi Stephens, a surveyor, who came to America from Wales. Men of his profession were in great demand at the time of his arrival as many land patents were being granted. Instead of accepting cash payments for his services he insisted upon the land value of his work, and in consequence at the time of his death was a large land owner of Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
