He was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania; came to Erie County in 1802, and subsequently engaged in mercantile business in Erie City, with George Spang, and later, followed farming until a few years prior to his decease.
He and his wife had eleven children; only one was still living in 1884.

He was among the first saddlers and merchants of Erie City.
