He spent his childhood in the appropriate tasks and pastimes of that age, and attended the public schools of his native region. His father was engaged in the lumber business, and as the lad grew up to manhood, he aided the older man, working in the woods and saw mill for some seven years. At the expiration of that time he left the parental roof and made his way to the town of Grampion, Pennsylvania, and secured employment in the brick-yards near there. Here he remained for about one year, and in the month of October, 1900, came to Scottdale, Westmoreland County, and there made his home. His first employment at Scottdale was as a farmhand on the property belonging to the Rev. Aaron Loucks. He felt, however, that a larger opportunity awaited him elsewhere, and leaving the farm of his employer, in April, 1901, he began to learn the trade of plumbing. He was employed by the firm of J. A. Dick & Company, which was engaged in a heating and roofing business, and remained with that concern until 1904. In that time he saved a sufficient capital to engage in business on his own account, and accordingly, in the latter year, established a plumbing house. His first years were spent in a small room, ten by twelve feet in dimensions, but the business rapidly grew until it came to occupy two buildings and was regarded as one of the largest houses of its kind in the county.
He and all the members of his family were devoted members of the Mennonite church of Scottdale.
