General Notes: Husband - Conrad Snyder, Jr.

He was born in Philadelphia County, PA, from which he moved to Bedford County, thence removing to Allegheny County, where he resided two years. In 1800, he came to Butler County, selected land, and the following year brought his family. His father, his mother, and a sister, Nancy, came with him.

He was fond of hunting, and made some money by following it. He at first lived near Muddy Creek, and, while residing there, one day he heard a hog squealing in a swamp or marsh formed by the overflow from a beaver dam. Taking his gun and creeping slowly along, parting the long weeds and tall grass as he went, he at length caught sight of the hog and found, as he had anticipated, that a bear was trying to kill it. Mr. Snyder did not dare to fire, fearing that he might kill the hog. But presently he happened to make some noise which attracted the bear’s attention. The animal rushed at him. Mr. Snyder fired and retreated as rapidly as possibly. Returning after a little he found the bear dead.

He was the original settler of the Snyders in Butler County, PA. He came from Switzerland at an early date, and in 1800 took up a tract of 600 acres in what was then Brady Township, and in the early days conducted a tavern. He was a man of exceptional ability and in time added to his possessions until he had 2,600 acres of fine land. At his death he was buried on the home farm.

He was born in Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, and came with his parents to Butler county when about twenty-three years of age. He purchased 400 acres of land, later known as the Watson farm, but subsequently sold one-half of this tract, and gave the remaining half to his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Double. After residing there some years he purchased 200 acres in Brady township, where his son Conrad would later reside, and there he spent the remaining years of his life. He was the most extensive farmer and stock-breeder in that section of the country, and a few years before his death owned 3,000 acres, situated in Brady, Franklin, and Slippery Rock townships. He gave to each of his children 200 acres of land, and at his death the remainder was sold and the proceeds divided among his children. He was quite a celebrated hunter, and during pioneer days made considerable money in this way, which he carefully invested in stock and lands. He was a self educated man, and could read and write both English and German fluently. In politics, he was first a Whig and afterwards a Republican, but would never accept any public office. He was one of the pioneer members of Muddy Creek Presbyterian church.

He died in 1865. [HBC 1883, 364]
