General Notes: Husband - William Craig McClelland, LL.D.
He remained in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, through his early school period, later attended Glade Run Academy in Armstrong County, after which he engaged in teaching school and prior to entering Washington and Jefferson College as a student, in 1876-7, he taught in an academy at Chase City, Virginia, and in 1877-9 at New Alexandria, Pennsylvania. He was graduated in the class of 1882, from Washington and Jefferson and then taught in Trinity Academy until 1885, after which he became a valued member of the faculty of Washington and Jefferson College. He thus was identified with this institution during its period of greatest usefulness and to it he devoted the best years of a life of scholarly attainment.
He was an active member of the Second Presbyterian Church at Washington, and for many years was the earnest and illuminating teacher of the Bible class in the Sunday school of this congregation. He delivered many lectures, traveled extensively and was widely known as an educator and contributor to periodicals on subjects relating to literature and natural history. In 1909 the degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon him by the University of Pittsburgh. Professor McClelland had a certain poetic vein which, although brief, was always spirited, as is shown by those stirring little verses, "Did You Ever Hear John Henry Jones Declaim'?"
