In the common schools adjacent to his home he acquired a preliminary education, and this was supplemented by attendance at the Mount Pleasant Institute. His active career was devoted to farming and contracting, and for a number of years he conducted a large dairy and milk route in Mount Pleasant, which yielded large returns for the labor expended thereon. He took a keen interest in educational matters, and for two years held the office of school director of East Huntingdon township. He was a firm adherent of the principles of Republicanism. He held membership in various fraternal organizations, namely: I. O. O. F., No. 350, of Mount Pleasant, in which he passed all the chairs; the B. P. O. E., No. 868, of Mount Pleasant; R. A., No. 592, of Mount Pleasant; and the M. W. A., No. 7082, in which he passed all the chairs.
