He and his wife were of German-Welsh descent, and passed their later years on a farm in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

He was born in East Bethlehem township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and lived in that vicinity until after his marriage, when he was accidentally killed in a carding-mill, which he owned and operated.
