General Notes: Husband - Robert Henderson

He erected the first house on the present site of Hendersonville about 1828 which was used as a hotel. In the year 1827, the U. S. Government established a postoffice, naming it Henderson. Robert was the first postmaster serving until 1842, and was succeeded by his brother Jonathan. He also established a store as well as a blacksmith shop.
Before the first church building was erected by the Methodists, the people of that denomination held services in Robert's home. He was one of the founders of the Hendersonville Methodist church and contributed generously to the church and was the largest subscriber to the church building fund. Mary Adelaide, (Jonathan-3, John-2, Robert-1), wrote that she remembered one winter at Hendersonville when it snowed a little almost daily, for about six weeks (a "tracking snowfall"). During that period Robert killed over 40 deer. During this same winter, Robert bought up a large sled ("bob sled") load of dried apples and took them to Cumberland County, PA, where he sold the apples, team and sled for a good price and returned home by stage and afoot.
Robert served as a Deputy Marshal for Mercer County when the 1840 U. S. census was taken. He was assigned to take the census of the east one-half of the county which took him about six weeks.
About 1845 he rented his large farm and decided to go farther west where he thought he could make more money. His first stop was in Carroll County, OH, where he lived a year or so, then to Seneca. After residing a year or two in Seneca County; he removed to Warsaw, Kosiusko County, IN. There he purchased a 100 acre farm near the city, but after a few years of ague and mosquitos and health broken, he returned to Hendersonville. Shortly after his return he traded his farm for one near Meadville, PA. He erected a fine home in the city where he resided until his death. (Winona Lake near his Indiana farm has since become a great health resort.)
