He was a resident of Bucks and Crawford counties, Pennsylvania, where he followed the occupation of farmer, and in the latter county also dealt extensively in the buying and selling of land, which added considerably to his income. He was a Quaker in religious faith, therefore was a peaceable and law-abiding citizen, honored and esteemed by those with whom he came into contact.
