General Notes: Husband - John Alexander Witherspoon
Montgomery Twp, Franklin Co, PA
He was born on his grandfather Little's farm. He was prepared for college at Mercersburg Academy, but after spending a year in the West returned to Pennsylvania and engaged in farming, which he followed until his removal to Mercersburg in 1891. In 1866 his father purchased the Irwin farm, and John A. came with him, remaining there until his marriage, when he assumed the management of the farm. He took delight in agriculture, and was one of the most prosperous farmers of his neighborhood. He served the township and county in official positions, including director of the poor, elected in 1884. He and his wife were Presbyterians of the strictest type, and were representatives of the original family faith (on both sides). They were descendants of the earliest settlers in the valley. In politics Mr. Witherspoon was a Republican.
After moving to Mercersburg he conducted a grain and commission business, proved himself an able business man, and came to rank among the prosperous citizens in the place.
