General Notes: Husband - Matthew W. Brown
During the progress of the Civil War in 1863, he enlisted in the Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry as a private, and during the last year of his two years' service was promoted to the rank of corporal. He participated in the following battles: St. Mary's Church, where the colonel of the regiment was killed; Trevillion Station, and Hatches Run. After receiving an honorable discharge from the service of the United States government, he returned home and settled on his father's old farm, becoming the owner of the property. He was one of the consistent members of the United Presbyterian church, and cast his vote for the candidates of the Republican party.
Civil War: He enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Thirty-fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in August, 1862, for a term of nine months, and in February, 1864, re-enlisted in Company I, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry, for three years or during the war. He served until the close of the war and was present at Lee's surrender.
