He was educated at the common schools and Western University. In 1858 he commenced the study of pharmacy, and thereafter followed the drug business. In 1871 he came to Mansfield, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and of the Presbyterian Church; he was a republican.
