General Notes: Husband - James Magee, Sr.
He was born in County Derry, Ireland, grew to manhood in his native land, and immigrated to the United States at the age of twenty-four years [about 1794]. In the last decade of the Eighteenth century he settled on 100 acres of land in what is now Jackson township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and afterwards purchased 230 acres additional. He later removed to Allegheny County, but returned to Butler County in 1821. He had learned the cooper's trade in Ireland, and followed that business after coming to America, but after locating in Butler County he devoted his principal attention to farming. He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church.
He and his wife were natives of Ireland who emigrated to America in 1794 and 1795, respectively, and were married in Franklin county, Pennsylvania, where they remained until the latter part of 1795, when they removed to Pittsburgh. While there he was offered fifty acres of land that is now in the very heart of that city for a horse and saddle, but refused this tempting offer which would have proven a fortune to him. He was finally persuaded by General Robinson to locate on one hundred acres in Butler County.
He was born in county Down, Ireland, and, upon immigrating to America, settled in Delaware, later moving to Pennsylvania, settling in the Conoquenessing valley in Butler County, in 1797. He spent eleven weeks on the ocean when coming to the new world, and in Butler County did his first farming with a mattock. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, fighting in the American army, and was a member of the Covenanter Church, to which all of his family belonged, and in which Mr. Magee was an elder. [GPHBC, 133]
