He was brought up on a farm and attended public school at Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Both there and in Clearfield County he was engaged in farming and lumbering. He was a Republican, and held the offices of tax collector and of assessor of taxes. He was a Presbyterian and was trustee in the church.
