He located on the old homestead in Fawn township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and engaged in farming. He frequently filled positions of trust and emolument in Fawn township. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.

He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools, and was for many years a successful farmer. He later lived a retired life in Tarentum, where he owned property. He was a stockholder in the Fidelity glass company and the Tarentum glass company. He was in politics a lifelong republican, and was formerly school director of Fawn township, Allegheny County.
