He was an early settler in Monroe township, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and a well-to-do farmer and coffin-maker. In the early days he made all the coffins needed in the area, and at the same time conducted his farming operations.

Her parents were born in Germany. On the voyage to the United States with his wife and daughter, the father died and was buried at sea.
