He was born in Mifflin township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, his parents having been among the earliest settlers in that section. He was extensively engaged in farming in Mifflin township on land which had been patended by William Penn to --- Van Swearingen, and from him to the Rankin ancestors. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church, and strict observers of their religion.
