He was a stonemason and farmer by occupation. He acquired the ownership of several farms, but was killed by a falling tree.

She was a pioneer Baptist; a cousin of the Hon. Thaddeus Stevens, and a relative of Alexander Stevens, vice president of the Southern Confederacy.
