The Ifft family was an old and prominent one in several parts of the United States. A nephew of George Ifft, Hon. George Nicholas Ifft, whose home was in Idaho, was representing the United States as consul to Germany.
In 1845 his parents moved from Beaver County, Pennsylvania, to Franklin Town-ship, Butler County, and there he remained on the home farm until he was sixteen years old. After that he worked for about forty years as a blacksmith, learning the trade in Lancaster Township. In 1858, when he was about twenty-one years of age, he went to California, taking the Isth-mus of Panama route, and remained there for some thirty years, although during this time he made several visits to his old home. He worked as a blacksmith and also as a gold miner and met with consid-erable success. In the fall of 1888 he re-turned to make his permanent home in Butler County and settled on a farm, where he carried on dairying and general agriculture.
