General Notes: Husband - George A. Spang

He was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, where he attended the public schools. He then learned the machinist's trade, and was employed at local shops until 1892, when he came to Butler, where he established his own business under his personal name, his purpose from the first being to manufacture and repair oil-well drilling tools. After about a year, Mr. Spang removed to Glade Mills, following the direction of the new oil wells; remaining there three years, he then went to Renfrew, where he continued three years; and by this time because of the expansion of his business, finding it necessary to secure a permanent basis, he returned to his original plant at Butler. On March 4, 1908, the concern was incorporated under the name of Spang & Company, with George A. Spang as president.
The plant had 300,000 square feet of floor space under roof, the company employing in normal times two hundred and fifty people, and their products, which were international in their scope, were forwarded wherever oil was produced. The concern was the largest one of its kind in Butler County, as well as one of the oldest. During the World War, this plant was conducted as an industrial Government establishment, and, employing over twelve hundred people, manufactured over 400,000 shells of the six-inch type. Mr. Spang was the inventor and patentee of many devices that were made use of in oil equipment, the most important being a set of jars composed of one piece of steel, which was universally adopted and was used all over the world.
Mr. Spang was a Republican in his political convictions. His fraternal affiliations were those of Lodge No. 272, Free and Accepted Masons, of Butler, of which his three sons were also members; New Castle Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the thirty-second degree; and Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; and he was a member of the Butler Board of Commerce. His religious faith was that of the Presbyterian Church.
