Two different accounts are given of this man's parentage. That given in the histories of Butler County, Pennsylvania, are completely different from that of GPHWP.

A native of Germany, he came to America in his youth and settled at Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania, where he became an extensive land owner, and a farmer, clearing much of the land himself. He and his wife were members of the German Reformed church.
