He was reared in his native township, and received a good common school education, supplemented by a course in Grove City College. He then taught in the district schools of Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, two years, after which he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. He resided on a farm in Pulaski Township, beginning in 1891, having a well improved tract of fifty acres there.
