He was a hardware merchant of Greensburg, Pennsylvania.

He attended public schools until sixteen years of age, then taught for seven terms in the county schools. After two more years spent as clerk, he opened a meat market in Greensburg, which he then successfully conducted. He was a member of the Lutheran church, and in political affiliation a Republican.
