He emigrated from Ireland to America settling in "The Manor," Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he engaged in farming. He was an officer in the Revolutionary war.

He married and they made their home for a few years in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, before moving to Westmoreland County. He was a Presbyterian.

She was a native of Winchester, Virginia, and later a resident of Bedford, Pennsylvania, whither she moved with her parents while still a child. The tradition of the family states that as a young girl she used to keep the cows in the vicinity of the springs which later became the famous watering place.
