The fourth son of his parents, he was educated in the common schools. He farmed until 1870, then kept store at Coon’s Corners until 1876, when he came to Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and embarked in business as an undertaker and liveryman.
He and his wife were members of the Christodelphian Church; in politics he was a Republican.
