He was educated in the common schools, and settled on his farm of 150 acres in 1861, bought in pieces at various times, and the most of which he improved, and erected thereon fine buildings. He enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Ninety-ninth Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served one year. He engaged in general farming and stock dealing. He served as school director, assessor and other small offices where pay is not considered. In 1888 he was elected a justice of the peace. He was a member of the K. of H. He and wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, of which he was trustee, class-leader. [HMC 1888, 1111]
