He was reared on a farm and received a common school education. He learned the carriage-maker's trade, which he followed in Kentucky and Tennessee until 1880, when he embarked in the mercantile business at New Hope, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and subsequently removed to Kiester, where he continued the same business. In 1894 he engaged in oil producing, and was operating in the Washington field. Politically, Mr. Book was a Democrat. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Presbyterian church.
He was born in Worth Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. He learned the carriage making trade and worked at the same for ten years at Louisville, Kentucky, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Green Hill, Pennsylvania. For several years he was also engaged in merchandising at Keisters and Coaltown, and at the latter place was postmaster. For some years he was also interested in oil production. He was identified considerably with public affairs in his township, and in February, 1908, he was elected justice of the peace, on the Republican ticket. He served some years as assessor of Cherry Township, as well. He owned fifty acres of land and he and his brother, Charles H., operated their two farms together.
