General Notes: Husband - Dr. Jay Crawford Booher, M.D.

He began his education in the public schools of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, later becoming a student in the Read Institute and Clarion Normal of Clarion County, and prepared for his profession in the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, which he entered in 1889. At the age of sixteen he began teaching, a profession he followed three years. Immediately after his graduation, in March, 1892, he located at Falls Creek, Jefferson County, and came to enjoy an extensive practice.
He was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society; of the State Medical Society; of the American Medical Association; and was medical examiner for the Knights of the Maccabees, to which order he belonged, and for the New York Life, and the Pennsylvania Mutual of Philadelphia. He was also connected with Garfield Lodge No. 559, F. & A. M., of Du Bois; of the Jefferson Royal Arch Chapter No. 225, of Brookville; and Knapp Commandery No. 40, at Ridgway; also affiliated with Falls Creek Lodge No. 957, I. O. O. F., and with the Rebekah branch of that order. The Doctor was much interested in blooded horses, and was the owner of one of the most valuable colts in America, Blanche B., registered and standard, sired by Star Pointer, record 1.59¼, the fastest pacer in the world, dam Tommy Hunter by Bay Tom; he also drove the finest road team to be found in the county.

He began his education in the public schools in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, later becoming a student in Reid Institute and Clarion State Normal School, Clarion, Pennsylvania, and preparing for his profession in the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, which he entered in 1889, and was graduated in 1892. Immediately after his graduation he located at Falls Creek, Pennsylvania, and cultivated an extensive practice. Shortly after he located at Falls Creek, there appeared a disease among the workers of the tanneries that baffled the older physicians. Four cases died in a few days, and Doctor Booher made the diagnosis as anthrax, which proved to be correct. Under his treatment the patients began to recover. In time he treated more than a thousand cases and only lost four. His fame as specialist in anthrax spread throughout the United States. He was consulted in the largest hospitals in the country and his success in treating this dread disease was unsurpassed in the history of medicine.
He gave special attention to the schools of his town and was instrumental in making many improvements. He was a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, the Pennsylvania Railroad Surgeon's Association; also consulting surgeon to the Adrian Hospital, Punxsutawney; Central Leather Company, New York; staff surgeon of the Maple Avenue Hospital, Dubois, and surgeon for the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. He was also an enthusiastic adherent of the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Garfield Lodge No. 559 of Dubois; Jefferson Royal Arch Chapter No. 25 of Brookville; charter member Bethany Commandery No. 83 of Dubois; charter member of Williamsport Consistory, Acacia Club, and a charter member of Jaffa Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S. of Altoona. He prized a jewel (25 year) presented by the Falls Creek Lodge No. 957, I. O. O. F. In college days he won great fame as an all-round athlete. He joined the football team immediately upon entering the university and remained with the team during his full course. He also was in the champion class in wrestling, boxing and broad-jump. For a number of years he was engaged in raising the best bred pacers and trotters. His horses and trained bird dogs and gun provided him the diversions he most enjoyed.
