He was born near Canonsburg, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and moved to Beaver County in 1851. He started in life poor, and accumulated a valuable property of 140 acres, where his son, John M., later resided. He was a member of the Hopewell Presbyterian church, and in politics a Republican.
