General Notes: Husband - Henry M. Wilkins
He was a tailor by trade and at the time of the Civil War did not go to the front. When General Sheridan's army was passing through that valley, leaving behind the devastation characteristic of a marching force in hostile territory, Mr. Wilkins met the approaching army at the border of the town and gained an audience with the commander, pleading that the town be left untouched by the soldiers. To such good effect did he speak that Sheridan, a fraternity brother in the Masonic order, ordered his troops to make a wide detour, and the homes of the little town were safe.
