He was educated at Mercersburg College, and was graduated at Cornell University in 1896. He studied law with his father, and was admitted to the Franklin County, Pennsylvania, Bar in the same year that he received his University degree. He was a member of the law firm of Bonbrake & Zacharias, and served as attorney for the borough of Chambersburg.
