General Notes: Husband - Jeremiah S. Detrich

He was born on the old family homestead in Antrim township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, some four miles northwest of Greencastle. He was reared on the farm with his father until he was twelve years of age, and in April, 1838, he began to learn the trade of cabinetmaking and undertaking with his brother, the firm being Crawford & Detrich. He completed a four-years' apprenticeship, after which he worked for two years at St. Thomas, at journeyman work. After three years he went to Harrisonville, Bedford County, and then went to Greencastle, where he entered the employ of his brother David, with whom he remained until 1851. The two formed a partnership in 1851, under the style of D. & J. Detrich, cabinetmakers and undertakers, and this was continued until 1881, covering a period of thirty years, but in that year David withdrew, and Jeremiah took sole charge, conducting same for nine years. In 1890 he took his son into partnership and the firm became J. Detrich & Son, and the business was confined to undertaking. This was the only undertaking establishment in Greencastle, established in 1829. During the long life of this house, the several proprietors made and furnished coffins and caskets to upward of 6,100 people. Even when past eighty, Jeremiah Detrich was hale and hearty, and carried his years with a grace and dignity which would do credit to many men his junior by several decades. He was always an active Odd Fellow, and took a deep interest in all things calculated to prove of public benefit. He served as a member of the council and on the board of education, although never seeking political preferment, his inclinations lying in the direction of his home and business affairs.
He and his wife were members of the Lutheran Church, in which he filled the office of elder for many years.
