General Notes: Husband - James Martin
A bend in the Allegheny River [in Venango County, PA,] partly inclosed the region known as Bully Hill, an agricultural district of considerable fertility. The first settler was James Martin, a native of Maryland, who made the first improvements on what later became the Kephart farms. James Martin planted the first orchard in the county with trees he carried on his back from Pittsburgh. It is said he possessed more than ordinary intelligence and influence. He was the first clerk of the board of County Commissioners upon its organization. Died in Indiana and is buried there.
He served in the war of 1812.
Unk if this reference is to this James Martin: One of James Martin's sons was known as Professor Artemus Martin of Erie, Pa. He was a mathematician of more than local reputation.
