He was educated in the high school of Leechburg, Pennsylvania, graduating in 1893. In the spring of 1894 he began to read medicine with his uncle, Dr. J. A. The following autumn he entered the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, graduating therefrom in the spring of 1897, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. After practicing for one year with his preceptor, Dr. Armstrong, in Leechburg, he moved in March, 1898, to Vandergrift Heights, and there entered upon his independent professional career, in which he was very successful. For two terms he served as secretary to the board of health. He also served at least three terms as school director and for two terms acted as chairman of the Republican county committee. He affiliated with Kiskiminetas Lodge, No. 617, F. & A. M., of Vandergrift, Apollo Lodge, No. 386, B. P. O., and Vandergrift Lodge, No. 502, K. P. He belonged to Orient Chapter, No. 247, of Kittanning, and Pittsburgh Commandery, No. 1, K. T., and was a member of the Westmoreland County Medical Society. Completing his general education in the public schools of Leechburg, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, in 1893, he prepared for his professional studies under the expert guidance of his uncle, Dr. J. A. Armstrong, of Leechburg. He then matriculated in the medical department of the University of Pittsburgh and was graduated from this institution with a Doctor of Medicine degree in the class of 1897. During the year that followed he practiced with his uncle, and in March, 1898, moved to Vandergrift Heights where he established himself in a general practice, and forty years later he enjoyed the unique status of being the oldest resident practicing physician in Vandergrift. He was a member of the Westmoreland County Medical Society, the Pennsylvania State Medical Society, the American Medical Association and at one time served as president of the Vandergrift Medical Society. After his forty years service as an examiner for the Prudential Life Insurance Company he was awarded a certificate and medal by the Prudential Old Guard, in which he was a member. He was also examiner for the New York Life and the Metropolitan Life Insurance companies for a quarter of a century.
His civic achievements matched his professional record. He was a member of the Vandergrift Borough Council for twenty-four years, twenty-two of which he has served as president. He was vice-president of the Vandergrift Savings and Trust Company, was a member of the local library board of two years, served on the medical examining board during the first World War and later enlisted in the Medical Corps of the United States Army, was commissioned a captain and was stationed at Army Hospital, No. 3, at Rahway, New Jersey. Through his military experience he was post commander of the William Harry Davidson Post No. 114 in 1928 of the American Legion and later served on two State committees for that organization; the disabled soldiers and relief and the child welfare committees, and was on the executive committee of Post 114 several years.
Dr. Boale was a member of the Vandergrift Chamber of Commerce, the local chapter of the American Red Cross and fraternized with Kiskiminetas Lodge, No. 617, of the Free and Accepted Masons, in which he was Master in 1908 and became a life member.
