General Notes: Husband - George Washington Bovard

He was reared and educated in Butler County, Pennsyvania. In 1862 he enlisted in Company F, One Hundred and Thirty-seventh Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served nine months, when he was honorably discharged. After that he engaged in mercantile business at Sherman Well, Venango County, where he remained in business eight years, and was postmaster five years. In 1871 he moved to Tionesta, and established a business, being also a member of the firm of E. Berlin & Co., dealers in general merchandise at Whig Hill, Forest County. He was once identified with the Democratic party, but in later years was independent. He was a member of Capt. George Stowe Post, G. A. R., No. 274, Tionesta, also of the I. O. O. F. and the A. O. U. W.

He was educated in the public schools, and reared on the Butler County farm, remaining there until August, 1862, when he enlisted in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He went to the front and saw hard service, being engaged at the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, South Mountain, Platts Plantation and other early battles of the civil war, serving ten months, although his enlistment was for three. He survived all the perils of war and after peace came located at Oil Creek, where for ten months he was clerk in a grocery store. He then formed a partnership with a capable friend, purchased his employer's business and as Bovard & McClellan conducted a successful business for six years. He then purchased his partner's interest and continued in business alone until December, 1871. He then moved to Tionesta, where he opened a general store and was successfully engaged until 1890, when his store was destroyed by fire. He at once rebuilt and resumed business in a much finer and larger building, continuing until his death. He was largely interested in the water and natural gas companies of Tionesta, also in the Gravity Water Works, which supplies Tionesta with an abundance of pure spring water from the mountains. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and in politics a Democrat. [GPHAV, 1082]
