General Notes: Husband - Daniel Hammer Boulton
He was an expert mechanic, learning his trade in the rolling and nail mills at Duncanville, Blair County, Pennsylvania, and was for twenty years in the employ of the Pennsylvania Central railroad, and later became interested in the oil, coal and gas business, and in the manufacture of steel. In 1868 he settled in Oil City, Pennsylvania, and established the firm of McElroy & Boulton in the mining and coal business, and this partnership being later dissolved he became interested in the oil industry with his brothers under the firm name of Boulton Brothers, and operated largely in the oil fields of Bradford, Butler, and Clarion counties. He was a member of the Acme Gas Company, and also identified with the natural gas business in Pittsburgh, and later became a member of the Allegheny Bessemer Steel Company, manufacturing steel rails at Duquesne, Pennsylvania, which company was finally absorbed by the Carnegie interests. He was prominent for many years in the Republican party, being chairman of the Venango county committee at the time of Garfield's nomination for the presidency, but left the Republican party at the time of the Blaine campaign, and was thereafter an ardent advocate of Prohibition.
