General Notes: Husband - Robert Shields
At the age of nineteen he went to Shieldsburg, Pennsylvania, where he learned the tanning business with Captain Benjamin Hill. In 1825 he went to New Salem and made additions to a small tannery which had been built there by his father, fitting it up in improved style. He there carried on the tanning business until 1870. He also bought out the saddlery and harnessmaking establishment of John B. Plumer and conducted that, in addition to managing a boot and shoe factory. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
He was a Presbyterian and an elder in that church, and Mrs. Shields was also a member. He was an old line Whig, later a Republican, and held several of the borough offices.
