He was educated in the common schools of Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Leaving school, he engaged for two years at Greensburg in the piano and organ business and then served as clerk with Bowman & Sons for about seven years, until 1883, when he engaged in the grocery business.
