He was educated in the schools of Muddy Creek Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and farmed on the home place with his father until 1916, at which time he purchased the farm from his father. After several years he sold the farm and went to Miami County, Kansas, where he remained until 1925. He then entered the employ of the Keystone Grocery & Tea Company, as manager of the Petrolia store. Later, he was transferred to Zelienople by the company but returned to Petrolia in 1926.
