General Notes: Husband - John Smail

He and his wife were natives of Germany; they came from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and settled in West Salem Township, Mercer County, in 1812-13. [HMC 1888, ]

He was in Westmoreland County, where Peter Smail, Sr., later moved, in time for the 1790 U. S. Census. His family at the time consisted of five members. By 1800, when he lived in East Huntingdon Township, his family had increased to eight. By the time of the 1810 U. S. Census, there were twelve in the family.
Around 1812 or 1813, according to a history of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, John and his wife, Mary Fisher, moved to West Salem Township in that county from Westmoreland County. The book also states that they raised eleven children; there were probably at least four others. It is believed that Mary was not the mother of all of them. Baptismal records for some of the older ones have been found in Westmoreland County. They give the parents as John and Anna Catharina Smail. If this is the same John Smail that lived in Mercer County, then his first wife was Anna Catharina Frey, a daughter of Samuel Frey and Catherine [Unk].
In 1830 John gave his farm to his son, Samuel; in return, Samuel was to take care of his father the rest of his life. John was not found in the 1830 U. S. Census for Mercer County. Samuel, however, lived in West Salem Township at that time. [PSP, 3]
