He was born on the old family homestead in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, grew to maturity beneath the parental roof, and was educated at the district school. In 1879 he located on his own farm, a part of the homestead, and greatly improved it by the erection of substantial buildings. He was one of the leading farmers of the town-ship, and devoted considerable attention to the breeding of fine stock. He was also an oil producer, and quite a prosperous business man. Politically, he was a stanch Democrat, and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic church, at Sugar Creek.
