General Notes: Husband - James Black
He raised a family of ten sons and one daughter in Marion township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and in 1883 was a resident of California [San Jose?].
He was born in Marion township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, and was reared on the old family homestead. He learned the cabinet-maker's trade and followed that business in connection with farming until 1866. Removing to Franklin in that year he engaged in the furniture and carpenter business, which he followed until September, 1874, and then removed to San Jose, California. During his residence in Butler County he took a deep interest in educational matters, and was a director in the public schools for several years. He was an elder in the United Presbyterian church from the age of twenty-five, and a liberal supporter of that organization. In politics, he was originally a Democrat, but afterwards united with the Republican party.
