He was a distinguished journalist and served as lieutenant-governor of Pennsylvania from 1882 to 1886. He was well known throughout the country as an ardent supporter of the political policies and principles promulgated by Thomas Jefferson, and for a period of ten years was president of an association of Democratic clubs in the United States.
