He was educated in an old log schoolhouse, and was engaged in farming all his life. At first he resided on a fifty-acre farm in Marion township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, then removed, July 2, 1889, to another farm, this consisting of one hundred and one acres. He put up excellent buildings, and made many improvements in the place. He gave his political support to the Democrats, and was a member of the German Lutheran Church.
