General Notes: Husband - Stephen L. Blachly, M.D.

He read medicine with his father till twenty-two years of age, and on account of the prevalence of smallpox at that time was called upon to begin an active career before his preparatory study was fully completed. He was educated at Washington College, and later received his degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia.

While engaged in general practice he became a skilled surgeon, and always had an extensive practice. He was frequently president of the Washington County Medical Society, of which he was one of the oldest members, and was also censor for the Eighth District of the State Medical Society of Pennsylvania, also a member of the American Medical Association, and the Alumni Association of Jefferson Medical College. He retired from active life in 1890. Physically he enjoyed good health. He was about five feet ten inches in height; weighed 190 pounds; was erect in stature; and became a very strong man by exercise, and care, though he was not robust when young.
He never used intoxicating liquor; in his youth he commenced smoking, but gave it up. He was a member of "Upper Ten Mile" Presbyterian Church fifty-eight years, and was an elder there thirty-five years.

While engaging in a general practice, he gave special attention to surgery, and for a number of years attended all of the surgical cases in his vicinity, performing amputations, etc., sometimes using in his operations a case of surgical instruments in his possession, that was once owned by his great-grandfather, Dr. Ebenezer Blachly, and used by him during his service as a surgeon in the Revolutionary war.
