A native of Switzerland, he came to America and settled at what was undoubtedly a very early date in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He was one of the pioneers of that region.

His family was noted for its longevity, all its members living to at least the age of seventy, and a number reaching the ages of eighty-two, three and four.
