In early life he was interested in the navigation of the Ohio river, being at various times clerk of supercargo and captain of boats plying between Pitts­burgh, New Orleans and Mobile. When the construction of railroads inter­fered with river navigation, he devoted himself to railroad enterprises, and was successively general passenger and ticket agent of the Pittsburg, Cincin­nati & St. Louis Railway, and of the Pennsylvania Company. He was a skilled accountant, and a personal friend of the war secretary, Edwin M. Stanton, who sought his services in reorganizing his department during the war.
