His early life was spent on the farm and in attending school in the neighboring schoolhouse. His first farm was situated in Rockdale Township, Crawford County, PA, where he remained several years. In 1865 he purchased a farm, located in the northeast part of Randolph township, consisting of 106 acres of choice land. Ten years previous to removing there he lived in the Brawley neighborhood, and while there was twice elected Justice of the Peace, and also served in other town­ship offices. He was for a time a member of the State Police. During the Rebellion he was drafted, but hired a substitute. He was a consistent member of the Congregational Church of Guy's Mills for several years. In politics he was a stanch Republican.
