He enlisted in Company K, Seventeenth Indiana Infantry, June 12, 1861. He became First Sergeant of his company, and with his regiment participated in the battles of Pittsburg Landing, Iuka, Corinth, Stone River, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and the score of engagements fought during the Atlanta campaign. He re-enlisted as a veteran in December, 1864, and was mustered out with the regiment August 8, 1865.
